I'm not a lawyer or expert on visa/residency issues, but from my own experience I think your company is probably correct - the fact that we are not EU citizens mean we have to live in Switzerland if that's where we work unless other conditions, such as having a spouse with EU work/residency permits applies. In my case I live in Germany because my wife (also US citizen) works here - our residency is tied to her job. My German residency permit explicitly says "erwerbestätigkeit nicht gestattet." The Swiss work permit only allows me to work in Basel, not live there....

Alex,

I need some help I am also an American Expat, my girlfriend is Slovakian with a permanent resident visa for Germany. My visa is issued by my employer also in Basel and I was informed because my visa is issued by a Swiss company i could not live anywhere but in Switzerland, due to the fact that i hold a U.S. passport. Is there any truth to this?? I would assume i could obtain a residence visa from Germany and live there and work in Basel just as yourself, but there again where would i start to obtain information on the legalities associated with a situation such as this???

Thanks for your time any information would be helpful.....
